Brooklyn Bridge Loft, New York, NY
New York, NY
Robert Young Architect’s first project as a newly-founded firm, this loft, located near the South Street Seaport and overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge, was designed on a tight budget and focused on expressing the original architectural attributes of the space. By exposing original brick and flooring and using off the shelf materials, the architecture provided a carefully considered design strategy for the clients, who were working within the constraints of a tight budget. A duplex, the two floors were connected through the design of a minimalist staircase, while newly exposed beams connect various zones throughout the upper level. The architect created a bathroom, which appears like a floating box in the middle of the space, covered in a perforated metal, to continue this feeling of cohesion throughout the door-less loft. Beneath the metal exterior is a layer of translucent fiberglass, transforming the structure into a lantern at night.
