303 Gallery – 22nd Street, New York, NY
New York, NY
Situated on 21st Street and 11th Avenue, the building features a trapezoidal footprint. The main challenge was integrating the “white box” exhibition room seamlessly without disrupting the flow. Vertical circulation, three private viewing rooms, and a grand reception area are housed within a triangle, while the rectangular space, boasting 21-foot ceilings and ample natural light from the glass façade, is left open for large exhibitions. The gallery also includes a private outdoor sculpture garden.
An origami-inspired raw-steel stairway ascends through a narrow triangle to the second floor, accommodating glass offices, art storage, and support spaces. Concrete transfer beams, serving as a design feature, support the load from the residential tower above. The interior palette comprises polished concrete, glass, wood, and steel, with rich woods adding warmth to the millwork and office floors, complemented by a wood louvered ceiling system.
